About Halstead

Halstead was laid out in 1873 on the Santa Fe line and incorporated in 1877. Dr. Arthur Hertzler, known as the Horse-and-Buggy Doctor, founded the Hertzler Hospital here, and the town was the main filming location for the 1955 movie Picnic. The restored Santa Fe depot is now the Halstead Heritage Museum and Depot, which still keeps the swan boat from the film.
