About Florence

Florence was named for the daughter of Samuel J. Crawford, the third governor of Kansas. Zebulon Pike's expedition followed the Cottonwood River past this spot in 1806, and the Florence Town Company chose the site because it was where the Santa Fe railroad would cross the Cottonwood.
